August 11, 2020, a day with news not everyone must have expected, concerning Covid-19. On that day Russia’s president. Vladimir Putin had announced that his country had become the first in the world to approve a coronavirus vaccine. It wasn’t without a doubt that there was obviously some speculation about this vaccine, from both scientists and the general public. Especially when other vaccines haven’t been approved nor have they passed phase 3 trials. That’s just the basic facts, here’s the full story.
Here is some of the knowledge of the vaccine in order to better inform you of the facts. The name of this vaccine is called Sputnik V and the way it works is from a modified version of the adenovirus. It focuses on the immune response to prevent COVID infections. This virus tends to cause a common cold which is not related to the flu. The flu is a symptom is of COVID, and the other strands of coronavirus are what also cause a common cold.
Now that we know some basic information about this Russian vaccine, it’s important to know how quickly the testing went. It’s clearly obvious the vaccine phase didn’t last long, and this was especially true for both phase 1 and 2. In total, both phase trials lasted only 42 days, with only 38 participants being in the trials between the ages of 18-60. The World Health Organization is planning to do a review on it. For the third and final testing trial, over 40,000 people are expected to take part in this experiment. Doctors that aren’t from Russia have said the data isn’t complete due to odd patterns that weren’t emphasized.
The Who, What When questions have been asked by the general public over this virus. When Putin plans to mass distribute the vaccine is by October, with doctors being the main priority. Surprisingly, his own daughter has taken this treatment already. In reality, experts believe that these vaccinations won’t be ready until mid-2021, luckily over 100 vaccines are currently in testing trial.
Of course, there has been skepticism over this unexpected announcement. It’s important to know Russia was accused by the U.K. the U.S. and Canada for apparently stealing their information. This is why both Europe and the United States were skeptical about the said vaccine. Even President Rodrigo Duterete of the Philippines offered to take it himself. In conclusion, it’s safe to say that the Russian vaccine has had controversy for their announcement, but what should people in general really think over their announcement?
