Amy Coney Barrett
Who is she?
Amy is an American lawyer, jurist, and former academic who now serves as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Trump nominated her to the Seventh Circuit, where the Senate confirmed her in 2017. Before and during this, she did work at the Notre Dame Law School where she taught civil procedure, constitutional law, and
statutory interpretation. After that, she was nominated to the Supreme Court.
What is the controversy behind her?
Recently, the United States of America appointed Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court of the United States. She was nominated by Donald Trump as a successor to Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who passed away recently. Ginsburg’s dying wish was for her spot not to be filled until after the election of a new president, but obviously, President Trump had other intentions. So Ms.Barrett was appointed and now she serves on the court, and those appointed are able to serve for as long as they want.
Her Views on the following topics:
Health Care:
When it came to health care, she did have some remarks towards it that weren’t exactly positive. She would criticize the chief justice, John Roberts, for his decision to uphold congress’s authority to enact large portions of the Affordable Care Act. She would go on to say “Roberts pushed the affordable care act beyond its plausible meaning to save the statute”. ( A Statute is a written law passed by a legislative body). In conclusion, she may be able to pose a risk to the health of millions of Americans.
Abortion:
She’s sort of infamous for her views on reproductive rights aka Abortion. She felt that a fetus’s life begins at the moment of conception which is a common ideal with pro-life people. In 2012 she signed a statement that said that the Obama administration’s policy requires an employee’s health plans to cover abortion a “grave violation of religious freedom and cannot stand’’. In 2015 she signed a statement to catholic bishops to endorsee the church’s conservative views on abortion, sexuality, and marriage. She’s been extremely critical of stare decisis which is basically teaching that tells judges that they have to follow an already stated law.
LGBTQ+ Community:
To simply state it, Amy does not support the LGTBQ+ community because she’s old fashioned and runs on the teachings of the past. She has shown hostility towards the community in both her words and rulings. She’s misgendered transgender people and has even gone out of her way to call them “psychological males’’ while doubting their needs for rights which is really embarrassing. Over 26+ LGBT organizations had gone against her being appointed to the supreme court. She defended the Supreme Court’s opposers on the landmark marriage equality case of Obergefell v. Hodges, she’s basically using her Christian teachings to try and spew hate. I guess she forgot the verse that dictates to love her neighbor, which basically means to love everyone, but she shall end up denying that too.
